The full story
Currently spanning across 15 main novels, with spin-offs and novellas in the works, the “Skulduggery Pleasant” series follows Stephanie Edgley, a young girl from Ireland, who inherits her uncle’s estate after his untimely death. At the estate she stumbles through a portal into a secret, magical world plagued by the apocalypse. Inside this world she adopts the name Valkyrie Cain and is forced to face sorcerers, cults and corrupt politicians. There she meets Skulduggery Pleasant, a walking, talking skeleton detective with a tragic past and fire powers. Together, they set out to investigate her uncle’s suspicious death, but their search for answers soon forges an unlikely friendship as they confront malevolent forces that seek to tear apart both the magical and mortal realms.
Though the first book in the series introduces us to the world of “Skulduggery Pleasant”, the rest of the series is separated into two phases:
Phase One – The original series (Books 1-9)
This part of the series explores how Stephanie, now as Valkyrie, joins Skulduggery Pleasant to battle evil and expose the dark politics lurking within the magical world.
Phase Two – The Resurrection Series (Books 10 -15)
Set ten years after book nine, this part of the series delves into the lasting trauma Stephanie carries from years of escalating catastrophes, as she struggles to balance her fractured identity in a changed world.
Why should I read this?
The Skulduggery Pleasant series offers more than just fast-paced action and witty humour—it provides a rich exploration of human experiences, introducing young readers to core concepts studied in Year 12 for the NSW HSC. Derek Landy’s world-building continuously evolves, creating a world that feels both fantastical and believable, that acts as a gateway into universal themes of morality, courage, and friendship. Characters face difficult choices with far-reaching consequences on both others and the wider world, showing how trust, loyalty, and moral responsibility shape identity and resilience. This connects directly to the Year 12 HSC Common Module: Texts and Human Experiences, where students examine how texts reflect individual and collective struggles. By blending entertainment with meaningful lessons, the series encourages readers to think critically about human behaviour and the complexities of moral decision-making, making it both engaging and academically valuable.
