Hello Mathletes and welcome back to another brain buster to help refine your problem solving skills!
Today we are diving deep into probability.
In Mathematics, probability is the study of the likelihood of events occurring, expressed as a numerical value between 0 and 1, or 0% and 100%. It serves as a measure of chance!
This is crucial as it equips us with the tools to make sense of uncertainty and plan ahead.
Real life applications
⛈️ Weather forecasting. When the weather app says “70% chance of rain,” it doesn’t mean it will rain in 70% of the area — it means that, based on models and past data, rain is expected in 70 out of 100 similar weather patterns. Meteorologists use probability models that combine satellite imagery, temperature, air pressure, wind speed, and historical climate data to predict the weather.
🤕 Risk assessment. Insurance companies rely heavily on probability to fairly determine the cost you pay. For example, for car insurance, they use accident statistics by age, driving history, and location. A young driver in a busy city may have a higher “probability of accident” than an older driver in a quiet town, so they pay more.
💉 Medicine. Probability helps doctors and researchers manage health risks. Medication side effects often say things like “affects 1 in 100 people” — that’s probability communicating risk to patients. If a genetic test shows you have a certain gene, doctors can calculate the probability of you developing a disease compared to someone without it. Even clinical trials use probability to measure whether a new drug works better than a placebo. For example, if 70% of patients improve on the drug versus 40% on the placebo, probability helps prove the drug is effective.
⚙️ Engineering. Engineers must build systems that are safe under uncertainty. They use probability equations to help estimate if their design structures can withstand certain events.
👨💼 Marketing. Businesses use probability to predict consumer behaviour. They test different sales designs or products to see which one performs best in the market.
