Chasing the Highest Scaling Subjects? Here’s 3 Reasons Why HSC Subject Scaling Isn’t Everything!

HSC subject scaling is one of the most misunderstood elements of Year 12. It’s rarely explained in class, the calculations look like a secret code, and there’s always clashing whispers throughout the playground:

“Physics scales high so it will boost your ATAR….. avoid PDHPE that scales so low, it will tank your ATAR”.

Let’s clear some misconceptions up – subject scaling exists to make HSC marking fair.

Scaling is the process the University Admissions Centre (UAC) uses to adjust HSC marks so students in different subjects can be compared fairly. It doesn’t “reward” certain subjects or “punish” others — it simply takes into account how strong each subject’s cohort performed that year and aligns marks to the same scale. That way, a Band 6 in Drama can be compared fairly to a Band 6 in Chemistry when calculating your ATAR. For more information about HSC marks and ATAR, read this!

Following common HSC subject scaling myths without understanding how scaling works can hurt your ATAR before you even start Year 12! So here are the top 3 HSC subject scaling myths that must be busted:

Myth 1: Doing “higher scaling” subjects guarantees a higher ATAR.

The Reality: Scaling rewards performance, not just subject choice.

It’s easy to believe that picking the right subject is the magic key to ATAR success. But HSC subject scaling is not a “bonus points system”, you don’t automatically win just because you picked a high-scaling subject. In fact, if you choose subjects for the wrong reasons, you could end up with a lower ATAR than if you’d just picked what you’re good at.

Some subjects tend to scale higher because the students who take them often perform strongly. But if you pick a subject just because you heard it “scales well” and then struggle in it, your mark will be scaled down — not up.

The ATAR is calculated from your best 10 units after scaling, so the real strategy is to:

Myth 2: Avoid subjects where the cohort is “too strong” or you’ll get scaled down.

The reality: A strong cohort can actually help you.

HSC subject scaling isn’t fixed, it changes every year based on how each subject’s cohort performs in the HSC exams. If your classmates perform well overall, it can lift your moderated school assessment mark and even improve your scaled result.

Moderation of marks prior to subject scaling is designed to even out differences between schools but still reflect the strength of your cohort in the externals. So, you don’t get “punished” for having smart classmates. In fact, their strong performance is often good for you.

If you are interested in scaling calculations, you should read UAC’s 2024 scaling report, which is an official record of how scaling worked for every HSC subject that year!

Myth 3: My school’s reputation affects my scaling.

The reality: Scaling is state-wide, not school-based.

The ATAR is based on your aggregated scaled marks, not your school’s name.

So, while your internal marks are moderated against your school cohort, your final scaling is based on everyone in the state who took that subject. Top performers at any school — selective, private, or public — can outscore average performers at so-called “top schools.”

What matters most in HSC subject scaling is:

The bottom line:

HSC subject scaling isn’t a mystery once you strip away the myths. It’s simply a way to compare students fairly across different subjects — and it’s your performance, not the subject’s “reputation,” that matters most.

So, when you’re choosing subjects: select what you enjoy, are motivated to study and know you can perform well in!
