Let’s be real — if you’ve left your NSW HSC Trials study prep to the last minute, you’re probably starting to spiral. Unfortunately (or fortunately for you), you are not the only one who’s done this. Whether you’ve been juggling other assignments, part-time work, or just didn’t know where to start, the good news is: two weeks is enough to make serious progress — if you’re strategic about it.
NSW HSC Trials are overwhelming enough as it is; they are the first time you sit a HSC style exam, so this isn’t about 12-hour study marathons that leave you burned out and sobbing into your past papers. This is about targeted revision that categorises NESA’S HSC syllabus content digestible pieces, preparing you to walk into trials confident and come out on top with a strong school rank.
🎯Before you start
- Use a planner to create a study timetable. Categorise your subjects, dedicating one day to a specific subject so you stay focused.
- Choose a study style that works for you. For some inspiration to beat procrastination and study properly, read this article.
- Collate the study notes you have created across the year into one google/word document or notebook.
🔁 Daily non-negotiables
- Wake up at a consistent time. Sticking to a routine will keep your studying motivation going.
- Eat three meals and stay hydrated with 2L of water – your brain needs all the fuel it can get.
- Disconnect from social media for at least an hour.
- Check your study planner so you know which subject to focus on.
- Exercise for 30 minutes
- Get 8 hours of sleep every day.
📚 What to do week 1 – content review
This is your opportunity to catch up on everything you need to! It’s time to consolidate what you know and review what you don’t.
- Review your syllabus – it’s what you are expected to know and what all your exam questions stem from. Check you truly understand what the syllabus actually wants from you.
- Create a syllabus cheat sheet – make sure the notes you have connect to a syllabus don’t point. If they don’t, you need to find more information.
- Start memorising content in whichever way works for you. If you want tips on how to memorise, read this article.
✏️ What to do week 2 – practice papers
This week it’s time to move on from simply reviewing content, and time to start applying what you know. Past papers and practice exams are the way to go. Each day you should:
- Complete two past papers in exam conditions (this means handwritten, timed in silence, without notes). You can find NSW HSC Trials past papers here! If you’re struggling to complete responses in exam conditions, read this article.
- Review and/or mark the completed exam. Note down where you went wrong, so you can look back on that content.
- Create essay scaffolds. This is a great way to ensure your knowledge is flexible – rather than going into the trials with memorised scripts, you are learning how to adapt to different types of essay questions.
- Make sure to get feedback on at least one completed response from your teacher or tutor. It’s important to make sure what you are writing is actually hitting the brief.
🧠 Preparing the day before trials
Here is your opportunity to mentally and emotionally prepare. Remember, don’t push yourself to breaking point – now is not the time for panic learning new content. Instead:
- Pack your pencil case – make sure all your HSC gear is ready.
- Plan your morning routine for the next day.
- Take some time for stress management (you can meditate, go for a walk, or even listen to music!).
- Avoid comparing your progress with friends – you don’t want self-doubt to start brewing.
- Do some light review. Trust your preparation.
