What is a Perfect Number?
A historical maths proof, first studied by the Ancient Greeks, a Perfect Number is defined as a number that is equal to the sum of its factors, excluding itself. Meaning, if you list out all the numbers that divide evenly into your chosen number (other than itself), and then add them up — the total is the original number.
Why do Perfect Numbers matter?
Though seeming like another quirky piece of mathematical theory, Perfect numbers have actually had large technological and socio-historical roles. For example:
- Cryptography: Perfect Numbers are the basis of algorithms for encryption keys, aiding cybersecurity in keeping your data safe!
- Socio-historically: Ancient Greek philosophers saw Perfect Numbers as symbols of divine balance and cultural harmony.
- Number Theory: They were a helpful tool when Mathematicians first started exploring primes, divisors and integer relationships
Maths challenge question:
28 is a perfect number as 1 + 2 + 4 + 7 + 14 = 28.
a) Prove that 496 is a perfect number.
b) Find another perfect number smaller than 28.
